United States Steel Corporation Appoints Charles G. Balawajder Vice President And Chief Information Officer

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) Chief Executive Officer Mario Longhi today announced the appointment of Charles G. Balawajder to the position of vice president and chief information officer effective Nov. 1.  Balawajder, who will be based at U. S. Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters, will report to David B. Burritt, chief financial officer and join the company's executive management team.

In this role, Balawajder will be responsible for global oversight of the company's business services organization as well as enterprise resource planning.  He succeeds David H. Lohr, who will retire from the company on Nov. 30. 

"Chuck brings more than 30 years of technical IT and business transformation experience to our company," said Longhi.  "His leadership skills will play an important role in establishing the strategic direction of our information technology portfolio and driving further value realization from our enterprise resource planning implementation."

Balawajder, 57, previously served as vice president, information technology and chief information officer at UTC Climate, Controls, and Security (CCS), a $ 17 billion division of United Technologies Corporation.  At UTC CCS, Balawajder led the company's global information technology organization through the development of a multi-year system strategy concentrating on web-based, single instance technologies.  He also led the IT team during the company's $1billion European acquisition.  Prior to joining UTC, Balawajder was with General Electric in their Lighting and Capital groups, respectively, where he served in a series of IT leadership positions.  Among his responsibilities, Balwajder directed the information technology organization's customer service improvements and productivity enhancements including Oracle financials, and implementing service systems throughout the company utilizing Six Sigma methodology.

A McKeesport, Pa., native, Balawajder earned a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's degree in business administration from Kent State University.  He and his family will relocate to the Pittsburgh area.
