DALLAS, June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) announced today an additional appointment to the operations organization of its tubular business unit following the completion of its acquisition of Lone Star Technologies, Inc., and its related companies. Dennis G. Quirk has been named plant manager-Longview Operations effective immediately and will report to David S. Mitch, who was appointed general manager-plant operations on June 26.

"Dennis's extensive background in tubular operations as well as his proven leadership skills, technical expertise and strong track record at a variety of U. S. Steel operations make him a solid choice to fill this role," said Joseph Alvarado, vice president-tubular.

Quirk, 52, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1976 as a summer student trainee at National-Duquesne Works, a tubular facility near Pittsburgh. He was named turn foreman-finishing operations in 1978 and turn foreman-forming and welding in 1981. In 1983, Quirk moved to Fairfield (Ala.) Works when he was named general foreman in the seamless pipe mill. He moved through a series of increasingly responsible positions in tubular and flat-rolled operations and was named manager-tubular operations at Fairfield Works in 2001. When U. S. Steel acquired Granite City (Ill.) Works in 2003, Quirk was appointed plant manager-finishing operations, a position he held until being named general manager-Minnesota Ore Operations in 2005. In January 2007, he was named plant manager-Edgar Thomson Plant, which is the primary operation of U. S. Steel's Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh.

Quirk graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1977 with bachelor's degrees in both industrial management and economics. Quirk, his wife, Cyndi, and their daughters, Savannah and Madelyn, will relocate to Texas.
