United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced that Thomas A. Coughlin has been named general manager-purchasing, succeeding Charles F. Hrach who retired at the end of July after serving the company for 35 years. In his new position, Coughlin will oversee the purchasing of raw materials, energy, supplies and strategic and contract services for the company's domestic operations as well as coordinate its global sourcing strategy. The appointment is effective September 1.

"With both domestic and international purchasing experience, Tom has the background and the leadership skills necessary to manage the complexities of sourcing products and services for a global steel company," said U. S. Steel President and Chief Operating Officer John P. Surma. "We expect the challenge to grow as the company grows here and abroad, but Tom is eager for the new challenge and committed to achieving the company's purchasing goals."

Following graduation from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb with a bachelor's degree in finance, Coughlin, 55, joined U. S. Steel in 1971 in the accounting department of the company's former South Works in Chicago. In 1976, he was assigned to the Chicago regional purchasing department as a buyer. He was transferred to Pittsburgh headquarters in 1979, where he served as a buyer of capital equipment until 1983, when he was promoted to manager-traffic. He was named manager-purchasing in 1984 and served in a number of increasingly responsible managerial positions in purchasing until he was promoted to general manager-purchasing at U. S. Steel's joint venture USS/KOBE Steel Company in Lorain, Ohio, in 1998.

In 1999, Coughlin was named director of administration for U. S. Steel's Lorain Tubular Company, and was promoted to general manager of Lorain Tubular in 2000.

Coughlin was assigned to U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic in January 2003, where he served as managing director of purchasing.
