United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced two key management changes, effective August 1. Sharon K. Kelley has been named plant manager of the Midwest Plant in Portage, Ind., and William J. Kelly has been named plant manager of finishing operations at Gary Works. Both will report to Gary Works General Manager Raymond R. Terza.

Sharon Kelley joined U. S. Steel in 1978 in the Quality Assurance Department at Gary Works. Throughout her career, she has served in a number of key operating, quality assurance, and sales and marketing functions, including senior area manager-steel producing, Gary Works; manager of quality assurance, Fairless Plant; general manager-commercial, tin products; and most recently, general manager-automotive sales and vice president of U. S. Steel International (USSI).

"In her leadership roles in sales and marketing of automotive and tin products, Sharon has developed a strong sense of the needs and demands of our customers," said John H. Goodish, U. S. Steel's chief operating officer. "This, coupled with her well-rounded operating and quality assurance background, makes her a solid fit to lead our Midwest Plant, a leading supplier of quality sheet and tin products."

A native of Gary, Ind., Kelley holds a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh.

Kelley succeeds John Price, who has been named general manager of business planning, a position at Pittsburgh headquarters.

William Kelly, a native of Allentown, Pa., earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1975. Following graduation, he joined U. S. Steel as a management trainee at Fairless Works. He subsequently held supervisory positions in electrical services, maintenance, and engineering before he was named plant manager in 1990. In 1993, he was named senior consultant for business process reengineering, a position at Pittsburgh headquarters, and was promoted to general manager of that group in 1996. From 2001 to 2004, he served as director of operations for the former Straightline business unit. He assumed his most recent position, division manager of sheet products at the Midwest Plant, in 2004.

In his new position, Kelly will oversee the finishing facilities at Gary Works, which include a hot strip mill, pickling lines, cold reduction lines, tin coating lines, and electrolytic and hot dip galvanizing lines. Kelly succeeds Frederick Jauss, who has been named general manager of Great Lakes Works outside Detroit.

"Bill's strong management skills, engineering background and extensive knowledge of finishing operations will help ensure that Gary Works remains a world-class supplier of value-added sheet and tin products," said Goodish.
