PRO-TEC Coating Company, a joint venture established in 1993 between United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) and Kobe Steel of Japan, today received the General Motors 2002 Supplier of the Year Award. At an award ceremony held at the plant, representatives from General Motors joined top management from U. S. Steel and PRO-TEC to recognize the plant's excellent performance and service in supplying the automaker with high quality, coated sheet steel products.

Paul Tosch, General Motors' executive director of purchasing steel and metal forming, presented the award to two long-term associates of PRO-TEC. Accepting the award on behalf of their colleagues were Lori Klear, business planning scheduler, and Sean Duling, repair operator, who have both worked at PRO-TEC since its first year of operation. Lori also spoke as a representative of PRO-TEC associates at the event.

Featured speakers included PRO-TEC President Paul Worstell and the following representatives from U. S. Steel: John Surma, president and chief operating officer; Paul Kadlic, executive vice president-commercial; and John B. Peters, general manager-automotive.

U. S. Steel supplies hot-rolled, cold-rolled, hot-dip galvanized and electrogalvanized steel for General Motors. Much of the steel produced at U. S. Steel's Gary Works in Gary, Ind., and Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh, Pa., is sent to PRO-TEC Coating Company for further processing. Another U. S. Steel joint venture, Double Eagle Steel Coating Company in Dearborn, Mich., also provides steel processing services.

U. S. Steel's Gary Works and Mon Valley Works also received the General Motors 2002 Supplier of the Year Award today. The plant-specific award presentations follow a previous ceremony held earlier this spring at which U. S. Steel Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Usher was presented the GM award recognizing U. S. Steel's corporate-wide achievement.
