Stand Up For Steel: Local Steelworkers and Steel Industry Representatives Join to Rally in Support of Steel Tariffs

PRNewswire
09.18.2003

On Saturday, Sept. 20, steelworkers, steel industry managers and employees, and local, state and federal representatives will hold a rally in support of the continuation of the Section 201 steel tariff program. The event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Visionland Theme Park in nearby Bessemer. Speeches will begin at 12:00 p.m.

President Bush implemented the tariff program in March 2002 as a three- year plan intended to allow domestic steel producers a relief period to recover from the steady flood of illegal imports and to restructure the U.S. steel industry. However, a report from the U.S. International Trade Commission on the tariff program, which is scheduled to be sent to the President on Friday, Sept. 19, may lead to a decision by the administration to eliminate the tariff program before it has run its full course.

The rally offers an opportunity for the industry to join with the United Steelworkers of America to demonstrate to the President that they stand together in support of continuing the tariff program through its full three- year term.

Featured speakers include Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley, U.S. Reps. Spencer Bachus and Artur Davis, and Jefferson County Commission President Larry Langford. U. S. Steel Fairfield Works General Manager Mark Whalen will speak on the necessity of maintaining the plan for the full, three-year term. Local union officials will also address the rally.
