Pape Named VP-Operations Of U. S. Steel Kosice

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced the appointment of Scott C. Pape to the position of vice president-operations for U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK), Central Europe's largest fully integrated flat rolled steel producer. In this position, Pape, 37, will be responsible for all operations-primary and finishing; maintenance and services; utilities; and quality assurance. The appointment was effective July 1, 2003.

"Scott Pape has a diverse background at U. S. Steel and has performed extremely well in a variety of positions in technical, operational and commercial areas," said Christopher Navetta, president of USSK.

Pape joined U. S. Steel in 1994 as a sales metallurgist at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters. In 1996, he was transferred to Gary (Indiana) Works as quality assurance manager-plate products. He was promoted to manager-plate operations in 2000 and then to manager-commercial plate products in 2001. In October 2002, he was transferred to Pittsburgh headquarters as manager- facility marketing for sheet products at Gary Works.

A native of Medina, Ohio, Pape has earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in metallurgical engineering from Case Western University, and a master's degree in business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Pape and his family will be relocating from Pittsburgh to Kosice in the near future.
