On Friday, June 13, United States Steel Corporation's Gary Works in Gary, Ind., will receive the General Motors 2002 Supplier of the Year Award in recognition of the plant's excellent performance and service in supplying the automaker with high quality sheet steel products.

Six General Motors representatives will attend, including Paul Tosch, executive director of purchasing steel and metal forming, who will present the award to Gary Works employees. Accepting the award on behalf of employees will be Gary Works' 13 longest-term employees, whose company service ranges from 49 to 60 years.

U. S. Steel representatives to speak at the event are: John Surma, president and chief operating officer; Paul Kadlic, executive vice president- commercial; George Babcoke, general manager of Gary Works; John B. Peters, general manager-automotive; and Jerry Watson, president of USWA Local 1066.

U. S. Steel supplies hot rolled, cold rolled, hot-dip galvanized and electrogalvanized steel to General Motors. While Gary Works produces the majority of steel that U. S. Steel supplies to General Motors, a significant amount is also produced at Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh. Steel from these two locations is further processed through two U. S. Steel joint ventures: PRO-TEC Coating Company in Leipsic, Ohio, and Double Eagle Steel Coating Company in Dearborn, Mich.

Mon Valley Works and PRO-TEC will also receive the General Motors 2002 Supplier of the Year Award on this day. The plant-specific award presentations follow a previous ceremony held earlier this spring at which U. S. Steel Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Usher was presented the GM award recognizing U. S. Steel's corporate-wide achievement.

The award ceremony and luncheon will be held at Gary Works. Media should arrive approximately 30 minutes prior to the event and should report to Pass Control. Proper identification and media credentials will be required for entry.
