U. S. Steel Vice Chairman and Chief Legal & Administrative Officer Dan D. Sandman To Retire In February

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John P. Surma announced today that Dan D. Sandman has elected to retire in February 2007 as U. S. Steel's vice chairman and chief legal & administrative officer and general counsel as well as from the company's board of directors.

Stephan K. Todd, vice president-law & environmental affairs, also has elected to retire in February.

James D. Garraux has been elected general counsel and senior vice president-labor relations & environmental affairs, effective Feb. 1, 2007. Garraux will join U. S. Steel's Executive Management Committee at that same time. Thomas W. Sterling, senior vice president-human resources & business services, has been elected senior vice president-administration, effective Feb. 1, 2007. Terrence D. Straub, senior vice president-public policy & governmental affairs, will report directly to Surma. Craig D. Mallick has been elected secretary of the corporation and will report to Garraux.

Sandman, 58, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1970, and a law degree in 1973, both conferred Cum Laude. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1971, and in 1989, he participated in the Stanford Executive Program.

In 1973, Sandman joined Marathon Oil Company - which was acquired by U. S. Steel in 1982 - and served in a series of positions in the marketing, antitrust, real estate and oil and gas law areas in London, Houston and Findlay, Ohio.

In 1986, Sandman was elected general counsel and secretary of Marathon. In 1992, he was elected secretary and assistant general counsel of the former USX Corporation in Pittsburgh, and in 1993, he was elected general counsel and secretary of USX. He assumed his current position and was elected to the United States Steel Corporation board of directors in January 2002, after it was spun off from USX.

Sandman is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Ohio Bar Associations. He is chairman of the board of the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center and chairman of the Ohio State College of Law's National Council. He also serves on the boards of the Carnegie Science Center, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance and the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. He has been an active supporter of United Way and is a member of the De Tocqueville Society.

In 2005, he was appointed co-chair of the Pennsylvania Corporate Counsel Roundtable by Chief Justice Ralph J. Cappy.
