United States Steel Vice President Bruce A. Haines to Retire

United States Steel LLC (NYSE: X), announced today that Bruce A. Haines, vice president-technology and management services, has elected to retire from the corporation effective January 31, 2002.

Commenting on the announcement, Thomas J. Usher, chairman of the board and CEO of USX Corporation, said, "Bruce has provided invaluable leadership in his oversight of the research, engineering, purchasing and other functions for the past six years. In addition, he is well respected by our customer community, as a result of the various commercial responsibilities he held during his nearly 35-year career. He also contributed many hours of service to a number of important community activities on behalf of the corporation."

A native of Martinsville, N.J., Haines, 56, earned a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from Lehigh University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. He served two years on active military duty as a project officer with the U. S. Army Test & Evaluation Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

He began his U. S. Steel career in 1967 as a metallurgical trainee at the Homestead (Pa.) Works. He moved through a series of metallurgical and operating posts there and was named market research analyst at Pittsburgh headquarters in 1974. Two years later he was named sales representative in the New York district sales office.

Haines returned to Pittsburgh in 1979 as manager of short range planning. He was appointed assistant general manager-standard and line pipe products in 1981 and became district sales manager in Houston in 1983.

He was named general manager-tubular products in 1986, was appointed vice president-purchasing and traffic in 1987, and was named vice president-sales in 1992. He was appointed vice president-planning and quality assurance in 1993 and named to his current post in 1995.

Haines currently represents U. S. Steel on the board of directors of Maglev, Inc. He is general chairman of the Greater Pittsburgh Council, BSA, Scouting Golf Classic and also served as a member of the Lehigh University Engineering Advisory Council.
