U. S. Steel Names James R. Gray General Manager -- Great Lakes Works

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced that James R. Gray has been named general manager – Great Lakes Works.  The change was effective Aug. 1.  In this position, Gray has assumed responsibility for U. S. Steel's second largest North American facility, which has an annual raw steelmaking capability of 3.8 million net tons and is located in Ecorse and River Rouge, Mich.  He reports to Vice President – U.S. Flat-Rolled Operations Anton Lukac. 

Gray, 40, joined U. S. Steel in 1995 as a management associate at the company's Gary Works in Gary, Ind.  From 1996 through 2005, he advanced through a series of increasingly responsible roles in the plant's blast furnace operations and maintenance functions.  In 2005, Gray was named division manager of iron production at Great Lakes Works, and one year later he was named division manager of the plant's steelmaking and casting operations.  Gray relocated to Slovakia in 2008 to serve as general manager of primary operations for U. S. Steel Kosice.  He returned to the United States in 2009 when he assumed his most recent post, plant manager – primary operations at Gary Works. 

Born in Vietnam and raised in Lakewood, Colo., Gray earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1995 and a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2004.  Gray, his wife, Michelle, and their three children will be relocating to the Detroit area.
