U. S. Steel Announces Management Appointments in Supply Chain Organization

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced three management appointments in its supply chain organization effective immediately.  

Gerald W. Gagliano has been named general manager – customer service.  Gagliano replaces Elizabeth L. Swearingin, who has left the company to pursue other opportunities.  James V. Bard will succeed Gagliano as general manager – logistics services.  Peter J. Alvarado will add Bard's former responsibilities for delivery performance to his current duties in the newly created role of general manager – delivery performance & processed products. All three will report to Vice President – Supply Chain & Customer Service Anton Lukac.  

In his new role, Gagliano, 56, will be responsible for customer service functions, including order entry and non-prime product sales, for U. S. Steel's North American flat-rolled operations.

Gagliano joined U. S. Steel in 1977 as a programmer in the systems & communications department in Pittsburgh.  During the next 17 years, he advanced through increasingly responsible positions in information technology, accounting, and invoicing and accounts receivable at the company's former Homestead (Pa.) Works and Duquesne (Pa.) Works as well as its business services facility and Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh.  

From 1994 to 2007, Gagliano progressed through management roles in the marketing, customer service and sales organizations for tin mill products. In 2007, he was named director – facility marketing & business planning, and in 2009 he advanced to director – supply chain management in the company's enterprise planning group. He was appointed to his most recent position, general manager – logistics services, in June 2010.  

Gagliano, a native of Bessemer, Pa., graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics and physics.  He will continue to be based at the company's corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh.  

Bard, 54, will be responsible for overseeing all outbound rail, barge and truck operations at U. S. Steel facilities in the United States and Canada.  

Bard's career with U. S. Steel began in 1981 in the business planning organization at Gary Works in Gary, Ind.  Over the next 22 years, he advanced through increasingly responsible positions in business and operations planning at Gary Works' flat-rolled and former plate products facilities as well as at the former Fairless Works in Fairless Hills, Pa. In 2003, Bard was selected to serve as manager – business planning on the first U. S. Steel management team at Great Lakes Works near Detroit, a facility acquired from the former National Steel Corporation.  

In 2006, Bard relocated to the Republic of Serbia after being named general manager – business planning for U. S. Steel Serbia, and one year later he advanced to general manager – commercial for the operation.  Bard returned to United States in 2008 after being appointed general manager – planning and supply chain for the company's tubular products unit.  He assumed his most recent position, general manager – delivery performance within U. S. Steel's flat-rolled products segment, in January 2010.  

A native of Greensburg, Pa., Bard earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and a master's degree in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1981.  Bard will continue to be based at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters.  

Alvarado, 54, will add the responsibility of overseeing delivery performance for the company's North American flat-rolled products to his existing duties related to the management of U. S. Steel's centralized sheet products processing operations.

Alvarado began his career with U. S. Steel in 1981 as a metallurgical engineer at the company's Research and Technology Center near Pittsburgh.  In 1985, he transferred into marketing and sales and during the next 20 years he advanced through a series of increasingly responsible positions covering a broad range of flat-rolled products, including nine years in automotive applications.  In 2005, Alvarado advanced to general manager – automotive and was responsible for sales activities within U. S. Steel's North American automotive market segment as well as operations at the company's Automotive Center, a sales and product development facility in Troy, Mich.  

Alvarado was appointed vice president – commercial, Europe in 2008 and relocated to Slovakia to oversee all commercial activities related to U. S. Steel's European operations – U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic and U. S. Steel Serbia in the Republic of Serbia.  He returned to North America in February 2010 and assumed his most recent position, director – processed products, shortly thereafter.  

Alvarado, who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, received a bachelor's degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and earned master's degrees in both metallurgical engineering and business administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981.  Alvarado will continue to be based at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters.
