U. S. Steel Announces Additional Management Appointments in North American Operations

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 13, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced several appointments in its North American operations unit effective Jan. 1, 2011.  

Scott H. Coleman has been named general manager of Great Lakes Works, U. S. Steel's integrated steelmaking facility in Ecorse and River Rouge, Mich.  Anton Jura, who currently serves as general manager – Canadian operations for the company's U. S. Steel Canada subsidiary, will advance to the role of president and general manager of U. S. Steel Canada.  Coleman and Jura will succeed David J. Rintoul, who was recently elected vice president – European operations and president – U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK) in the Slovak Republic.  Also, Thomas Kelly has been appointed to succeed Coleman as general manager – Minnesota Ore Operations.  Coleman, Jura and Kelly will report to Senior Vice President-North American Flat-Roll Operations Michael S. Williams.  

Coleman, 44, will assume responsibility for all steelmaking and finishing activities at Great Lakes Works, U. S. Steel's second largest North American facility with an annual raw steelmaking capability of 3.8 million net tons.  Coleman joined U. S. Steel in 1994 as a shift manager in the finishing operations at Fairfield Works in Fairfield, Ala., after spending five years at the former AK Steel facility in Dover, Ohio.  He advanced through increasingly responsible positions in Fairfield Works' finishing operations and was named senior area manager – coating and finishing in October 2000.  

In 2003, Coleman accepted an assignment as deputy general manager-finishing operations at U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic.  He returned to Fairfield Works in 2005 as plant manager-finishing operations.  In 2006, he advanced to the position of plant manager-Keetac, an iron ore mining and pelletizing operation in northern Minnesota.  Coleman was named to his most recent post, general manager – Minnesota Ore Operations, in 2007.  

A native of Cortland, Ohio, Coleman graduated from the University of Akron in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in industrial management.  Coleman, his wife, Denise, and their three children will make their home in the Detroit area.  

As president and general manager of U. S. Steel Canada, Jura, 45, will have management oversight for all U. S. Steel Canada operations.  He has managed day-to-day operations at the subsidiary's two southern Ontario steelmaking operations – Hamilton Works in Hamilton and Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke – since March 2009.  

Jura began his professional career in 1987 as a technology foreman in the metallurgical ceramics plant VSZ Keramika, owned by VSZ, the Slovak steelmaking company purchased by U. S. Steel in November 2000.  Over the next nine years, he held increasingly responsible positions at the metallurgical ceramics plant, and in 1996 he was named to the executive board of VSZ a.s. and concurrently vice president for strategic planning.  In 1998, he became director of the joint venture VSZ-U. S. Steel, s.r.o.  When U. S. Steel acquired VSZ in November 2000, Jura was appointed U. S. Steel Kosice's vice president for human resources.  He was named vice president for strategic implementation at USSK in 2003 and advanced to general manager-processed products at U. S. Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters in 2006, a position he held until his appointment in 2009 as general manager-Canadian operations.  

Jura, a native of Bardejov in the Slovak Republic, graduated from the Technical University in Kosice, Faculty of Metallurgy in 1987.  Between 1996 and 2000, he participated in the Weekend Executive Master of Business Administration course at the University of Pittsburgh's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and earned a master's degree in business administration.  Jura and his wife, Dana, and their youngest son will continue to live in the southern Ontario area.  

A native of Pittsburgh, Kelly, 55, will oversee matters at both Minnesota Ore Operations iron ore mining and pelletizing facilities: Minntac in Mountain Iron, Minn., and Keetac in Keewatin, Minn.  Kelly began his career at U. S. Steel in 1978 as a laborer at Gary Works in Gary, Ind.  He was promoted through supervisory positions in steel production, iron making and casting at Gary Works and Fairfield Works before advancing to division manager – steel production and casting at Gary Works in 1996.  Over the next seven years, he progressed through similar roles in iron production and at the plant's hot strip mill.  

When U. S. Steel completed its purchase of Serbian steelmaker Sartid a.d. in 2003, Kelly was named president and general director of the newly formed U. S. Steel Serbia.  In 2005, he returned to the United States and Gary Works to serve as plant manager – primary operations.  He advanced to plant manager of Midwest Plant, a finishing facility in Portage, Ind., in September 2006 and was named general manager – blast furnace engineering & technology in March 2008.  Kelly assumed his most recent positions, managing director – transportation for U. S. Steel and president of the company's transportation subsidiary Transtar, Inc., in May 2009.

Kelly, his wife, Sanja, and their two children will relocate to northern Minnesota.
