U. S. Steel Announces Management Changes at Corporate Headquarters

PITTSBURGH, March 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United States Steel Corporation today announced several management changes at its corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh. Deborah A. Grabe has been named general manager-processed products, replacing Anton Jura, who was recently named general manager-U. S. Steel Canada Inc., U. S. Steel's Canadian subsidiary. John B. Peters will succeed Grabe as general manager-business enterprise planning, and Elizabeth L. Swearingin will assume Peters' former role as general manager-customer service. Grabe, Peters and Swearingin will report to John C. Price, vice president-supply chain & customer service. All three appointments were effective March 1.

 

In her new role, Grabe, 45, will oversee the company's centralized sheet products processing and delivery operation.

 

Grabe's U. S. Steel career began in 1988 as a management associate in the company's purchasing department at its Pittsburgh headquarters. After advancing through increasingly responsible roles in purchasing, finishing operations at Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh, raw materials planning, procurement, distribution and sales, and tubular products from 1988 through 2006, Grabe was named general manager-procurement at U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic. She returned to the United States in March 2008 when she was appointed to her most recent position, general manager-business enterprise planning.

 

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Hookstown, Pa., Grabe earned bachelor's degrees in accounting and finance from Robert Morris University in 1985. She completed her master's degree in business administration at Duquesne University in 1996.

 

As general manager-business enterprise planning, Peters, 46, will be responsible for planning and scheduling production at all of U. S. Steel's North American steelmaking and finishing facilities.

 

Peters joined U. S. Steel in 1985 as a management associate in the Commercial Department in Houston, Texas. He advanced through increasingly responsible roles in tubular product sales and flat-rolled product sales and marketing from 1987 to 2001, when he was named general manager-automotive at U. S. Steel's Automotive Center in Troy, Mich. In 2004, he relocated to Pittsburgh after advancing to general manager-appliance, tin and container.

 

In September 2005, Peters was named vice president-commercial, Europe and was responsible for all commercial activity at U. S. Steel's operations in the Slovak Republic and the Republic of Serbia. In May 2008, he returned to Pittsburgh after being named to his most recent post, general manager-customer service.

 

Peters is a native of Elkhart, Ind., and graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in business.

 

Swearingin, 50, will assume responsibility for customer service functions, including order entry and non-prime product sales, for U. S. Steel's North American flat-rolled operations.

 

Swearingin joined U. S. Steel in October 2008 in the role of general manager-order management, master data & technical support. Before arriving at U. S. Steel, she was vice president of worldwide sales at Empower MX, an aviation consulting and software development company. Prior to that, she spent three years with Workbrain, a leading provider of workforce management solutions based in Atlanta, Ga., where she served as senior director of transportation and logistics and was responsible for building the marketing, sales and customer resource management functions for the global transportation and logistics division. Swearingin also spent 15 years at USAirways, where she advanced through increasingly responsible positions culminating in her appointment as a managing director overseeing planning, supply chain, finance and information systems.

 

Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y., Swearingin received her bachelor's degree in history from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., in 1981 and completed her master's degree in business administration at Babson College in Babson Park, Mass., in 1986.
