U. S. Steel Names Douglas R. Matthews Vice President-Tubular Operations

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United States Steel Corporation announced today that Douglas R. Matthews has been appointed vice president-tubular operations and president of the company's U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc. subsidiary effective immediately. Matthews succeeds Joseph Alvarado, whose retirement was previously announced by the company.

In his new position, Matthews, 43, will have executive responsibility for the company's tubular operations and associated functions. U. S. Steel Tubular Products is the largest tubular products manufacturer in North America, with a total annual capacity of approximately 2.8 million net tons. Matthews will report to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John H. Goodish and be based at the company's corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh.

"Doug's strong leadership skills and broad operations background will aid our overall efforts to ensure that U. S. Steel Tubular Products is the supplier of choice for seamless, welded and specialty tubular products and services to customers in the energy industry," said Goodish.

Matthews, a native of Uniontown, Pa., joined U. S. Steel in 1988 as a management associate at Mon Valley Works' Edgar Thomson Plant near Pittsburgh, Pa. He progressed through increasingly responsible management roles in electrical and caster maintenance at the Edgar Thomson Plant and the coating operations at Mon Valley Works' Irvin Plant before being transferred to PRO-TEC Coating Company, U. S. Steel's joint venture with Kobe Steel of Japan located in Leipsic, Ohio, in 1997 to manage the installation and commissioning of the facility's second continuous galvanizing line.

From 1998 to 2003, Matthews oversaw iron production at the former USS/KOBE steelmaking venture in Lorain, Ohio, and then at Gary Works in Gary, Ind. He was named division manager of steelmaking and casting at Gary Works in 2003 and advanced to general manager-blast furnace engineering and technology at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters in 2005. Matthews was appointed vice president and general director of U. S. Steel Serbia, d.o.o. in 2006 and was responsible for overseeing all activities at facilities in three Serbian cities. He assumed his most recent position, president and general manager of U. S. Steel Canada, in October 2007, when U. S. Steel completed its acquisition of Canadian steelmaker Stelco Inc. Since then, he has been responsible for overseeing operations at the company's Canadian subsidiary, which includes two steelmaking and finishing facilities in southern Ontario.

Matthews graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and received a master's degree in business administration from Duquesne University in 1993. He and his wife, Kimberly, and their two children will relocate to the Pittsburgh area.
