U. S. Steel Vice President-Tubular Operations Joseph Alvarado to Retire

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United States Steel Corporation announced today that Joseph Alvarado, vice president-tubular operations and president of the company's U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc. subsidiary, will retire from the company on February 28, 2009. The business unit will report directly to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John H. Goodish until a permanent successor for Mr. Alvarado has been named.

"Joe's experience in both the steelmaking and tubular products industries has been a great benefit to us since he joined U. S. Steel in 2007 to lead the integration of the operations of Lone Star with U. S. Steel's Tubular Division," said Goodish. Alvarado, 56, has spent his entire career in steelmaking, beginning with his first job - in Inland Steel's finance department - after completing his master's degree in 1976. In 1979, he moved to Inland's sales department, where he progressed through increasingly responsible management positions in sales and customer service. Alvarado was named manager-strategic planning in 1985, advanced to manager-plate production one year later, and was named manager-automotive marketing and international development in 1987. In 1988, he was appointed vice president and general manager-sales and marketing for Inland Bar Company and was named president in 1995.

Alvarado assumed the role of executive vice president-commercial at Birmingham Steel Company in Birmingham, Ala., in 1997 and joined Ispat North America Inc. in 1998 as vice president-long products sales and marketing. In 2004, Alvarado accepted the positions of president and chief operating officer at Dallas, Texas-based Lone Star Technologies, Inc. and held them until U. S. Steel named him vice president-tubular operations and president-U. S. Steel Tubular Products, Inc. in June 2007 after acquiring Lone Star Technologies, Inc. and its related companies.

Alvarado currently serves on the board of directors of the American Petroleum Institute and the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association, and he is a former board member of the Metals Service Center Institute. He is also a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America.

A native of East Chicago, Ind., Alvarado graduated from the University of Notre Dame (Ind.) in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in economics and earned a master's degree in business administration from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1976.
