U. S. Steel Announces Management Changes in Its North American and European Commercial Organizations

PITTSBURGH, April 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced a series of management changes within its North American and European commercial organizations. John B. Peters will return to the United States from U. S. Steel Kosice in the Slovak Republic to serve as general manager-North American flat-rolled customer service. He will report to J. James Kutka, Jr., senior vice president-sales & customer service. Peter J. Alvarado will replace Peters as vice president-commercial, Europe. Alvarado will report to George F. Babcoke, senior vice president-European operations & president-U. S. Steel Kosice. Bert J. Phillips will fill Alvarado's role as general manager-automotive. Phillips will report to Joseph R. Scherrbaum, Jr., vice president-sales. The moves will be effective May 1.

Peters, 45, will oversee North American flat-rolled customer service functions for the company, including order and technical service and non-prime product sales. He joined U. S. Steel in 1985 as a management associate in the commercial department in Houston, Texas. From 1987 to 1994, he held increasingly responsible sales positions in tubular products and flat-rolled products for automotive applications. Peters moved into flat-rolled products marketing in 1994, serving as an industry manager for the appliance, container, and domestic and commercial equipment markets.

In 1996, Peters was named manager-sales, automotive at U. S. Steel's Detroit sales office. He advanced to general manager-automotive in 2001. Peters relocated to Pittsburgh in 2004 after he was named general manager-appliance, tin and container. He assumed his most recent position, vice president-commercial, Europe, in 2005.

Peters, a native of Elkhart, Ind., graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington with a bachelor's degree in business. Peters, his wife, Meg, and their four children will return to the Pittsburgh area from Slovakia.

Alvarado, 51, will assume responsibility for all commercial activity related to U. S. Steel's European operations. Alvarado began his career with U. S. Steel in 1981 as a metallurgical engineer at the company's Research and Technology Center in Monroeville, Pa. In 1985, he transferred into marketing and sales and advanced through a series of increasingly responsible positions covering a broad range of flat-rolled products.

In 1996, Alvarado moved into automotive sales as a senior sales engineer and in 1998 was named director of sales for automotive. He advanced to his most recent position, general manager-automotive in 2005.

Alvarado, who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, received a bachelor's degree in metallurgical and materials engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978 and earned master's degrees in both metallurgical engineering and business administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981. He and his wife, Margie, will relocate to Slovakia.

Phillips, 48, will oversee sales and product development efforts for automotive applications, which are based at U. S. Steel's Automotive Center in Troy, Mich. Phillips joined U. S. Steel in 1988 as an employee relations staff associate. In 1989, he moved into the company's commercial organization and progressed through a series of increasingly responsible positions over the next eight years.

After assignments in product and facility marketing, Phillips was named manager-sales and service for industrial equipment and construction applications in 1999. In 2004, he relocated to the Automotive Center after advancing to his most recent position, manager-automotive sales. In this role, Phillips has overseen the company's relationships with select automotive customers.

A native of Pittsburgh, Phillips graduated from The Pennsylvania State University in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Phillips, his wife, Janet, and their two children will remain in the Troy area.
