Manos, 56, began his career at U. S. Steel in 1973 in the Commercial Department at the company's Cleveland sales office. After advancing through a series of increasingly responsible management positions in operations, sales, marketing and personnel at the Cleveland office, Lorain (Ohio) Works and the company's Pittsburgh headquarters, Manos returned to Lorain Works in 1986 when he was named manager of marketing and business planning. Promoted to assistant to the president in 1989, he played a significant role in the formation of U. S. Steel's then joint venture with Kobe Steel of Japan, USS/Kobe Steel Company. In 1996, he was named vice president of business processes and public affairs for USS/Kobe.

In 1999, Manos was named director-administrative, governmental and legal affairs for Republic Technologies International, a company comprised of USS/Kobe and Republic Engineered Steels and Bar Technologies. He remained in that position until 2000, when he transferred to the former USX Corporation's St. Paul, Minn., governmental affairs office to direct the company's legislative activities in the state as manager-governmental affairs. In 2002, Manos returned to Pittsburgh headquarters after being named manager, public affairs. He was promoted to general manager-human resources in September 2003, a position he held until his recent appointment.
