U. S. Steel Announces Management Changes at Headquarters

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 5, 2007 – United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced two key management changes at its headquarters operation in Pittsburgh. Stephen A. Szymanski has been named general manager-business development, and John A. Rose has been named general manager-ERP Project. The appointments became effective Feb. 1.
 
Szymanski succeeds James D. Lawrence, who retired at the end of January. He reports to John J. Connelly, senior vice president-strategic planning & business development.
 
Szymanski, 55, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1974 and advanced through several sales positions in Chicago and Milwaukee. In 1981, he became a sales representative for the company’s Central region, and in 1983, he moved into marketing when he was named product manager for heavy products. Szymanski was promoted to manager-sales for the Midwest region in 1988 with responsibility for plate and structural products, and in 1992, he was named district sales manager for the Chicago area. Szymanksi moved through a series of increasingly responsible sales positions and in 2002 was appointed general manager-service center, electrical, agricultural and industrial with responsibility for sales to those markets. In 2005, he was named general manager-ERP project when he was selected to lead the company’s global Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project, which assessed the impact and investment of implementing an ERP worldwide.
 
Szymanski earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering management from the University of Missouri at Rolla, a master’s degree in management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and a master’s degree in business management from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. In 2005, he received a professional engineering degree from the University of Missouri at Rolla.
 
Rose, who succeeds Szymanski as general manager-ERP project, will assume responsibility for global project management and coordination of U. S. Steel’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) project implementation. He will report to Thomas W. Sterling, senior vice president-administration.
 
Rose, 54, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1979 as a process control engineer at Gary Works. He advanced through increasingly responsible positions in process control at Gary Works before leaving U. S. Steel for National Steel in 1984. At National Steel’s Midwest Plant, Rose served as manager of process control, director of information technology, director of maintenance and chief engineer before moving to the company’s headquarters in Mishawaka, Ind., where he was responsible for information technology companywide.
 
When U. S. Steel acquired certain National Steel assets in 2003, Rose was transferred to U. S. Steel’s headquarters in Pittsburgh to serve as manager-special projects and planning. In 2004, when U. S. Steel formed the Business Service Center, he was named business liaison lead. He was appointed general manager-business processes in 2005, and in January 2007, he was named general manager-plant processes.
 
Rose graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science.
