U. S. Steel Honored By General Motors As Its 2002 Supplier of the Year for Flat SteelPRNewswire-FirstCall United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) was named General Motors' 2002 Supplier of the Year for Flat Steel products. The award recognizes U. S. Steel's overall excellence in supplying GM with sheet steel products throughout 2002. "U. S. Steel is representative of the companies GM expects to grow with us as we seek to increase market share," said Bo Andersson, vice president, GM Worldwide Purchasing Production Control & Logistics. "The company's performance and contributions have been critical in helping GM to become the industry's low cost producer of high quality vehicles. U. S. Steel serves as a role model for other suppliers." Tom Usher, chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of U. S. Steel, accepted the award at ceremonies held Saturday, April 12, in Miami, Florida. Following the presentation, Usher said, "We are honored to earn this prestigious award from one of our largest customers. This is gratifying recognition of our company's intense focus on satisfying customer needs and our employees' hard work and attention to quality, customer service and cost effectiveness. Steel supplies four different product lines -- hot rolled, cold rolled, hot-dip galvanized and electrogalvanized steels -- to 14 General Motors metal fabricating divisions and over 30 GM resale customers in the United States, Canada and Mexico. According to John Peters, general manager-Automotive for U. S. Steel, "Our steels are used by GM in over 650 automotive parts, including many critical exposed parts such as hoods, fenders, roofs, doors, body side outer panels, floor pans and bumpers. Nearly every GM vehicle built in North America contains parts made from steel supplied by U. S. Steel. "In addition to supplying GM and other customers high quality steel products, we're also dedicated to providing them value-added services through our Automotive Center in Troy, Michigan. Work here focuses on helping our customers with manufacturing cost reduction, tooling development, design optimization and material development for tomorrow's automobile. The center also serves as a resource for our customers on advanced high strength steel types, properties and new steel technologies, such as our new trademark named DUAL-TEN™ steels. The information we generate here helps our customers' automotive engineers, designers and purchasing managers apply cutting-edge research to improve manufacturing processes and reduce costs." Gary Works in Indiana produces most of the steel supplied to General Motors, some of which is further processed through two U. S. Steel joint ventures: PRO-TEC Coating Company in Leipsic, Ohio, and Double Eagle Steel Coating Company in Dearborn, Michigan. U. S.
