U. S. Steel Names Hurley President of USS Real Estate

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced that Garrett F. Hurley has been appointed president-USS Real Estate, succeeding Stephen K. Struebing who will retire at the end of August after serving the company for 36 years. As president-USS Real Estate, Hurley will be responsible for managing the company's real estate holdings, including the development of planned luxury communities in Alabama, the sale of mineral interests and the redevelopment or disposition of former plant sites. The appointment is effective September 1.

Steel President and Chief Operating Officer John P. Surma. "Garrett's broad background in management, accounting, finance and strategic planning make him perfectly suited for this challenging position."

Hurley, 58, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1978 as manager- accounting and finance for the former Chemicals Division in Linden, N.J. He served in several managerial accounting and finance positions for various divisions of the corporation before he was named manager-operational analysis- steel in 1984.

In 1986, Mr. Hurley was appointed manager-systems development, divisions and subsidiaries, and later that year, director-computer systems and financial analysis for the former U.S. Diversified Group. The next year he was named director-corporate financial analysis, a position he held until 1990 when he was promoted to director-corporate finance.

In 1994, Mr. Hurley was named director-joint ventures, other business and asset redeployment; in 1997, director-joint ventures and business development; and in 2000, director-joint ventures and strategic planning. He was appointed director of raw materials accounting in 2002.

He graduated from Manhattan College in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in finance and economics, and completed the corporation's Advanced Management Program in 1985.
