U. S. Steel Names George Manos GM of Human Resources

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced that George A. Manos has been named general manager- human resources. Manos succeeds Charles R. Frame, who will retire after serving the company for 37 years. The appointment is effective September 1.

"George's background in sales, marketing, operations and personnel has given him a broad knowledge of the corporation's business functions and strategy," said U. S. Steel President and Chief Operating Officer John P. Surma. "This wide range of experience along with his excellent management skills make him an excellent choice for this demanding strategic position."

Manos, 52, began his career with U. S. Steel in 1973 in the Commercial Department at the Cleveland sales office. He steadily advanced through a number of increasingly responsible management positions in operations, sales, marketing and personnel at the Cleveland office, Lorain Works, and Pittsburgh headquarters.

In 1986, Manos was named manager of business planning and marketing for Lorain Works in Ohio. Promoted to assistant to the president in 1989, he played a significant role in the formation of U. S. Steel's then joint venture with Kobe Steel of Japan, USS/Kobe Steel Company. In 1996, he was named vice president of business processes and public affairs for USS/Kobe.

In 1999, Manos was named director-administrative, governmental and legal affairs for Republic Technologies International, a company comprised of USS/Kobe and Republic Engineered Steels and Bar Technologies. He remained in that post until 2000, when he transferred to St. Paul, Minn., where, as manager-governmental affairs for USX, he directed state legislative activities for U. S. Steel, Marathon Ashland Petroleum and Speedway SuperAmerica. In 2002, Manos returned to Pittsburgh headquarters when he was appointed manager, public affairs, a position he held until his recent promotion.

Manos earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Ohio Northern in 1973.
