U. S. Steel to Kick Off United Way CampaignParty on the Plaza Will Include First-Ever Million Dollar Football TossPRNewswire United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) will kick off its United Way campaign with its annual U. S. Steel/United Way Party on the Plaza on September 13, 2002. This year's party will include a Million Dollar Football Toss, where one person who makes it through the qualifying rounds will have a chance to throw a football through a 10-inch target from 40 yards to win half-a-million dollars. The other half-million will go to the United Way. In addition to representatives from U. S. Steel and its three Pittsburgh-area facilities, representatives from several area companies and one random contestant selected from a drawing at noon will participate in the contest. The Football Toss contest ties into U. S. Steel's campaign theme for this year: Take a Chance, Change a Life. "While the Party on the Plaza is a fun- filled event, it serves a very serious purpose in helping the United Way. The United Way and its programs have such a positive impact on our communities, and in the wake of September 11, the support the organization gave to those affected was overwhelming," said George Manos, manager-public affairs and corporate meetings, and U. S. Steel's United Way employee campaign manager. "We as a company wanted to raise the bar in contributions for this year and the idea of the Million Dollar Football Toss was a perfect fit." The party, which takes place on the plaza of the U. S. Steel Tower, begins at 11:00 a.m. and concludes at 3:00 p.m., with the Million Dollar Football Toss qualifying round beginning at 12:10 p.m. and the Final Toss at 1:00 p.m. Joining the Party on the Plaza this year will be alumni from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who will hold a pep rally from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Celebrity photos and autographs, games, raffles, food and more will be available at the party. Media are invited to attend. A special area will be reserved for media for both the Steelers pep rally and the Football Toss.
