UEC to Provide Low Moisture Quenching Technology to Wuhan Iron & Steel

UEC Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X), announced that it recently signed a license agreement to provide its low moisture quenching (LO- MO) technology to Wuhan Iron & Steel Corporation of China. It is UEC's fifth LO-MO technology license agreement signed in China.

This U. S. Steel-developed coke quenching process significantly reduces the average coke moisture content from that normally attained with the conventional spray quench and makes possible the complete quench of deep-bed, one or two-spot cars. A reduction in the variation in the moisture of the metallurgical coke leaving the quenching station is also achieved. The LO-MO process also reduces or eliminates hot spots on the coke wharves.

Wuhan Iron & Steel Corporation is the fourth largest steelmaker in China, with a production capability of 7.5 million tons of steel annually. It has an aggressive program to expand its production and improve quality. A new 6-meter coke battery is scheduled to be put into operation in late March 2003. Wuhan is located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province in central China.
