John P. Surma, Jr. Elected President of U. S. Steel

Gretchen R. Haggerty Named Chief Financial Officer; Other Significant Management Changes

Thomas J. Usher, chairman of United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced the election of John P. Surma, Jr. to the position of president of U. S. Steel effective March 1. In his new position, Surma will report to Usher who will continue as chairman and chief executive officer.

Surma joined U. S. Steel as vice chairman and chief financial officer when the company was spun off from USX Corporation (USX) on January 1, 2002. He previously held several senior management positions with USX, Marathon Oil and Marathon Ashland Petroleum.

"I recognized John Surma's potential when we hired him six years ago to work for Marathon," said Usher. "He did an excellent job at Marathon, and I was delighted to have him join the U. S. Steel leadership team. I have a great deal of confidence in John's ability. He is totally dedicated to the steel business and is driven to making us a world-class steel producer."

Succeeding Surma will be Gretchen R. Haggerty who has been named executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer. In her new position, Haggerty, who was formerly senior vice president and treasurer, will report to Surma along with Roy G. Dorrance, who continues as vice chairman and chief operating officer, and Dan D. Sandman, who continues as vice chairman and chief legal and administrative officer.

John H. Goodish, who has served since 2000 as president of U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK), the company's steelmaking operation in the Slovak Republic, will return to the United States as executive vice president-international and diversified businesses. In this new position, Goodish will lead U. S. Steel's expansion in central Europe and will be responsible for other international businesses.

Christopher J. Navetta has been named president of U. S. Steel Kosice, replacing Goodish. In his new position, Navetta will be responsible for all Slovakian operations, administrative functions and governmental relations. Navetta, who was named executive vice president-USSK last December, will report to Goodish along with Donald L. Foster, vice president-international and president of UEC Technologies, LLC, and Leonard H. Chuderewicz, vice president-diversified businesses.

In other management changes, Terrence D. Straub was promoted to senior vice president-public policy and governmental affairs, and Charles C. Gedeon was named executive vice president-raw materials and transportation. Straub will continue to represent the company in Washington, DC and to report to Sandman. Gedeon will continue to report to Dorrance.

Under the new organization, John J. Connelly, vice president-strategic planning and business development and John J. Quaid, manager-investor relations, will report to Usher.

   John P. Surma, Jr.
   President - United States Steel Corporation

John P. Surma, Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1954. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting.

He joined Price Waterhouse LLP in 1976 and was promoted to manager in 1981. He served in the Manchester, England, office of the Price Waterhouse United Kingdom firm during that same year, and in 1982 returned to Pittsburgh in the health care specialty department.

In 1983, Mr. Surma participated in the President's Executive Exchange Program in Washington, D.C., where he served as executive staff assistant to the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

Upon returning to Pittsburgh, he served a number of major companies in the steel, oil and gas, chemicals, mining and manufactured products industries. He was promoted to senior manager in 1985, and was admitted to the partnership in 1987. His experience included assistance in the Securities and Exchange Commission registration process, acquisition accounting and leveraged buyouts, and he was designated as one of the firm's lead inventory accounting, mining industry and environmental services specialists.

Immediately prior to joining Marathon Oil Company in 1997, he was the Pittsburgh office leader for Audit and Business Advisory Services, and national co-leader of the Products Advisory Group, responsible for providing consulting services to major manufacturing and process companies. In 1997, Mr. Surma was named senior vice president, finance & accounting for Marathon Oil Company. He was named president, Speedway SuperAmerica LLC in 1998, and senior vice president, supply & transportation for Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP) in 2000. He was named president of MAP on January 1, 2001, and assumed the position of assistant to the chairman of USX Corporation, effective September 1, 2001. Effective with its separation from USX, he became vice chairman and CFO of United States Steel Corporation on January 1, 2002. He was named president of U. S. Steel in March 2003.

Professionally, he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable. He is a member of the board of Calgon Carbon Corporation and the board of visitors of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh.

   Gretchen R. Haggerty
   Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer

Mrs. Haggerty is a native of Pittsburgh. She earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and a law degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Joining the corporation as a management trainee in the tax division in 1976, Mrs. Haggerty was named tax assistant in 1977 and moved to the audit division the following year. She transferred to the financial department as leasing analyst in 1980, became senior financial analyst in 1982 and advanced to corporate finance manager two years later.

In 1985, Mrs. Haggerty was appointed director-plant and general accounting for the former USS Chemicals Division. The next year she returned to the tax division as a general tax attorney and was named director-taxes, energy in 1987.

Mrs. Haggerty was named assistant treasurer-corporate finance in 1988, was appointed assistant comptroller-corporate accounting in 1989, was elected vice president & treasurer of USX Corporation in 1991 and named vice president-accounting and finance of U. S. Steel in 1998. She assumed the position of senior vice president and controller in January 2002, and was elected senior vice president and treasurer in May 2002. In March 2003, Mrs. Haggerty was promoted to executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer. In addition, she serves as director of the United States Steel and Carnegie Pension Fund and is a member of the Investment Committee and the Administration Committee of the Fund.

Mrs. Haggerty is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive) in the State of Ohio. She is a member of the Administration and Finance Committee of the United Way of Allegheny County and serves on the boards of Highmark Inc. and the Civic Light Opera.

   John H. Goodish
   Executive Vice President - International and Diversified Businesses

Mr. Goodish is a native of Greensboro, Pa., and a 1970 graduate of Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Mr. Goodish joined U. S. Steel in 1970 as an accounting management trainee in Pittsburgh, and was promoted to junior auditor the following year. In 1973 he became supervisor of billing at the company's Irvin Plant near Pittsburgh and progressed through a series of accounting positions there until 1977, when he was transferred to the accounting department at U. S. Steel's former Homestead (Pa.) Works. In 1982, he was promoted to general supervisor of line accounting at the Clairton (Pa.) Works. Later that year, he moved to the company's Pittsburgh headquarters, where he served in a number of accounting and financial positions.

In 1984 Mr. Goodish was transferred to Gary Works as accounting manager-mill analysis. Three years later, he was named division manager of coke and chemicals, an appointment that moved him into the operating area. In 1989 he became manager of operations services at Gary Works and later that year was named division manager of the 84-inch hot strip mill at Gary Works. He became general manager at Mon Valley Works in July 1990 and returned to Gary Works in June 1994 as general manager.

In September 1996, he was elected President of USX Engineers and Consultants, Inc., a worldwide engineering and consulting firm. He was elected president of U. S. Steel Kosice, s.r.o. (USSK), in December 2000. In March 2003, Mr. Goodish returned to U. S. Steel's Pittsburgh headquarters to serve as executive vice president-International and Diversified Businesses.

Mr. Navetta, a Detroit native, began his career as an accounting trainee in 1969 at U. S. Steel's Gary Works in Indiana after graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration. In 1972, Mr. Navetta moved to Pittsburgh and held a number of financial positions with the Chemicals Division. In 1975, he returned to Indiana as manager-accounting, Molded Plastic Products, and in 1976 was appointed manager-accounting, West Coast for the U. S. Steel Products Division in Alameda, Calif. Three years later, in 1979, he was promoted to staff assistant for the company's Central Steel Division in Chicago.

Mr. Navetta returned to Pittsburgh in 1981 as staff supervisor-commercial analysis and progressed through a series of managerial accounting posts. In 1985, he was appointed manager-accounting for Fairless Works near Philadelphia. He moved back to Pittsburgh in 1987 as director-analysis and general accounting and two years later was named general manager-administration and group comptroller for the Diversified Group. In 1992, he was appointed comptroller-raw materials for Diversified Business and Joint Ventures, a position which included representing the company on the management committees for USS-POSCO Industries, USS Kobe Steel Co., PRO-TEC Coating Co. and Double Eagle Steel Coating Co. In 1994, Mr. Navetta returned to Gary Works as general manager-plate products.

In 2001, Mr. Navetta was named president of USX Engineers and Consultants, Inc., which was renamed UEC Technologies LLC in July 2002. He served in that post until December 2002, when he was appointed executive vice president of U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK), with responsibility for all operations and administrative functions. He was promoted to president of USSK in March 2003. He is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and a board member of the National Aviary.
