U. S. Steel Names Whalen GM of Fairfield WorksPRNewswire United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced the appointment of Mark D. Whalen as general manager of U. S. Steel's Fairfield (Ala.) Works effective Sept. 1, 2003. Whalen will succeed William P. Lewis, who is retiring after 38 years of company service. "Bill Lewis has had a long and distinguished career at U. S. Steel and has demonstrated outstanding leadership during the past nine years as general manager at Fairfield Works," said U. S. Steel President and Chief Operating Officer John P. Surma. "Although Bill will be missed, Mark Whalen possesses an exceptional knowledge of the industry and proven operating experience. His contributions to the success of U. S. Steel's European operations clearly demonstrate that he has the leadership abilities essential to lead a major steelmaking operation at a time when U. S. Steel is focusing on making our domestic facilities capable of competing in a challenging global steel marketplace." Whalen, 40, joined U. S. Steel in 2000 as general manager of primary operations at U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK), the company's steelmaking operation in the Slovak Republic. He was reassigned in March 2003 to serve as plant manager of the Smederevo plant of Sartid a.d., a steel producer in Serbia for which U. S. Steel has facility management and support agreements. Prior to joining U. S. Steel, Whalen began his steel industry career with AK Steel Corporation in 1994, where he served in several research and operations positions before being named manager of the 86" Hot Strip Mill in 1998. From 1991 to 1994, he was employed as a senior research engineer at Tippins Inc., a company that specializes in the supply and modernization of rolling mills. A native of Pittsburgh, Whalen graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1989 and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 1991, both from Pennsylvania State University. Whalen is a member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers and is an associate member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He and his family will relocate to the Birmingham, Ala., area. For more information about U. S. Steel, visit our web site at www.ussteel.com .
