United States Steel Corporation's (NYSE: X) Gary Works in Gary, Ind. today received the General Motors 2002 Supplier of the Year Award during an award ceremony held at the plant. Representatives from General Motors joined top U. S. Steel management and the employees at Gary Works to recognize the plant's excellent performance and service in supplying the automaker with high-quality sheet steel products.

Paul Tosch, executive director of purchasing steel and metal forming for General Motors, presented the award to Gary Works. Accepting the award on behalf of the approximately 7,000 employees of Gary Works were the 11 employees with the most years of service: Grace Majeski, 60 years; Garfield Springer, 55 years; Virginia Guffey, 54 years; Joseph Demack, 53 years; Joseph Garcia, 52 years; Eddie Sanders, 52 years; Raymond Carpenter, 51 years; Raymond Pavel, 50 years; James Vandiver, 50 years; Donald Culp, 50 years; and Gene Bruszewski, 49 years.

Speaking on behalf of U. S. Steel were John Surma, president and chief operating officer; Paul Kadlic, executive vice president-commercial; John Peters, general manager-automotive; George Babcoke, general manager of Gary Works; and Jerry Watson, president of USWA Local 1066.

Gary Works supplies hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and electrogalvanized steel to General Motors. While Gary Works produces the majority of steel that U. S. Steel supplies to the automaker, a significant amount is also produced at Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh. Much of the steel from these two locations is further processed through two U. S. Steel joint ventures: PRO-TEC Coating Company in Leipsic, Ohio, and Double Eagle Steel Coating Company in Dearborn, Mich.

Mon Valley Works and PRO-TEC also received General Motors 2002 Supplier of the Year Awards today. The plant-specific award presentations follow a previous ceremony held earlier this spring at which U. S. Steel Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Thomas J. Usher was presented the GM award recognizing U. S. Steel's corporate-wide achievement.
