United States Steel LLC today announced that it was named to CMP Media's InformationWeek 500, a prestigious listing of the largest and most innovative users of information technology. It was the second year in a row that U. S. Steel has made the InformationWeek 500, which has tracked businesses' IT agendas for 13 years. Companies named to this list demonstrate a pattern of technological, procedural and organizational innovation.

U. S. Steel ranks 217th in the current 500, a dramatic leap forward from the 408th spot it achieved in this distinguished listing last year.

"We have several Information Technology groups at our Pittsburgh headquarters and at our major steelmaking facilities, and our employees comprising these groups should all be extremely proud of this accomplishment," said Thomas J. Usher, Chairman and CEO of USX Corporation. "This significant achievement reflects U. S. Steel's recognition of the necessity of having an innovative IT strategy in a very competitive industry. It also underscores our employees' dedication to quality processes and services, and their willingness to aggressively step forward with new technologies."

Gene Trudell, U. S. Steel's general manager, Computer Services, said, "U. S. Steel may be a century-old steelmaker, but this award demonstrates that we're a leader in information technology as well as in steel production. We're an exciting blend of both old and new economy with a talent pool of innovative employees capable of distinguishing the company as one of the nation's elite firms in our use of leading-edge IT."

U. S. Steel's information technology strategy continues to focus on e-commerce, object-oriented web technology and supply chain management. "We're capitalizing on our Oracle order fulfillment applications integrated with i2 Technologies' factory planning software," adds Trudell. "We believe we lead our industry in supply chain management capability in support of our customers. To ensure quality application development and deployment in this new world, we sought and obtained ISO 9002 certification in 1998 and, most recently, we have been certified to the new, more stringent ISO 9001:2000 standard. Information technology continues to be a cornerstone of U. S. Steel's success."

"In a down market, staying competitive is critical, and there's a delicate balance between opportunistic investments and prudent spending," said Rusty Weston, editor of InformationWeek Research. "The findings of the 2001 InformationWeek 500 reinforce past results that early adoption of new technologies is essential to an organization's success."

"What defines the leaders in the InformationWeek 500 is an intense focus on customers, a desire to collaborate, and a drive to improve employee productivity," said Stephanie Stahl, editor of InformationWeek.

The InformationWeek 500 is the most detailed source of industry-specific IT budget data. The research project gathered in-depth information directly from companies about how they approach and prioritize their IT investments. The research identified and ranked the companies following an extensive mail, phone and fax study, as well as a survey of senior IT executives on their organizational priorities and spending plans for the year ahead.
