U. S. Steel's Clairton Works Named to EPA's Prestigious National Environmental Performance Track ProgramPRNewswire The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named United States Steel Corporation's Clairton Works as a member of the National Environmental Performance Track, a voluntary leadership program developed by the EPA to honor outstanding environmental performers. Clairton Works was one of only 280 manufacturing and other facilities throughout the nation to be recognized recently by EPA Administrator Christine Whitman for demonstrating strong environmental performance that exceeds the requirements of compliance. At an event late last month in Washington, D.C., Whitman presented Clairton Works and other members with a certificate and remarked, "As Performance Track members, you represent a superb example of what we can achieve through partnerships among people and organizations with a passion for protecting the environment and serving their communities. Together we can ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for our children and grandchildren." Whitman personally presented the certificate to Clairton Works General Manager Ray Terza, Coleen Davis, senior environmental engineer, and Bill Graeser, manager of environmental control and quality assurance. By taking a proactive approach to addressing environmental concerns, Clairton Works has developed a number of initiatives that minimize the facility's effect on the environment. According to Daniel Fiorino, director of EPA's Performance Initiatives Division and program manager for the National Environmental Performance Track, this facility's accomplishments have led EPA regulators to use Clairton Works as the model when developing air and water regulations for the entire coke industry. "We've always considered ourselves to be the leaders in the coke industry in terms of environmental performance," said Terza, "and being a member of a voluntary program such as Performance Track takes us to the next level of excellence in protecting the environment throughout our daily operations." Established in June 2000, National Environmental Performance Track is a voluntary public-private partnership that supports continuous environmental improvement through the use of environmental management systems, community involvement and measurable results. One of the goals of the program is to build better relationships among EPA, states, businesses and local communities. Additionally, members must commit to achieving a number of goals to further improve their environmental performance. The largest manufacturer of coke in the United States, U. S. Steel's Clairton Works was the first coke plant in the world to achieve certification to the ISO 14001 standard, a stringent, international standard used to measure facilities' environmental management systems. The plant also received a number of other environmental awards including EPA's Green Lights Program "Partner of the Year," the Allegheny County Health Department Enviro-Star Award, and the Governor's Waste Minimization Award. The facility also maintains two wildlife habitats, both of which are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council.
