Peregrine Falcon Chicks to be Banded at U. S. Steel Gary WorksPRNewswire On Friday at 9:00 a.m., two representatives from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will be working with employees of U. S. Steel's Gary Works to band two peregrine falcon chicks born this spring at the plant. The chicks were the second brood born to Crystal, a 3-year-old peregrine falcon who was released in 1998 from a captive-breeding program in St. Louis. The two chicks were the 29th and 30th to be hatched at Gary Works. Susie-Q, the 12-year-old peregrine falcon that had been nesting at Gary Works since 1989, did not return to her nest last year. She was one of the oldest peregrine falcons in the state of Indiana and was approaching the end of her breeding life. Crystal, so named because she is a bright spot at the plant, arrived last spring and took up residence in Susie-Q's nest. Crystal's mate, Vulcan, is 12 years old and is the oldest breeding peregrine falcon in the state of Indiana.
