U. S. Steel To Install Quench And Temper Facility At Lorain Tubular

The board of directors of USX Corporation today approved an $86 million project to install an in-line quench and temper facility on the No. 3 Seamless Mill at the Lorain Tubular Company of United States Steel LLC (NYSE: X) in Lorain, Ohio. The facility will produce tubular goods with enhanced properties to serve energy producers in the exploration and development and the transportation markets. It will also produce specialized standard pipe products used for high temperature applications.

With an annual capacity of 340,000 tons, the new facility will allow Lorain Tubular to heat treat tubular products with outside diameters from 10-5/8 inches through 24 inches and with wall thicknesses up to 1.5 inches. The unique in-line design of the quench and temper operation will take advantage of residual heat remaining in the product after hot rolling to reduce energy consumption during the heat treating process and will enable the No. 3 Seamless Mill to produce heat treated products with world class cost efficiency.

In addition to the heat treating facility, the tube finishing facilities will be revamped to include a new higher pressure hydro tester and an ultrasonic inspection area.

U. S. Steel Tubular Products has operating facilities in Lorain, Ohio, Fairfield, Ala., McKeesport, Pa. and produces seamless tubular products from 1.9 inches to 26 inches O.D. and welded products from 8-5/8 inches to 20 inches O.D.
