U. S. Steel Names Frederick Jauss General Manager of Great Lakes Works

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) today announced that Frederick G. Jauss has been named general manager of Great Lakes Works, effective August 1. Great Lakes Works, in Ecorse and River Rouge, Mich., is one of five integrated steelmaking facilities the company operates domestically and produces high value-added sheet products for the automotive industry.

"Fred's strong technical background and experience in finished products make him an excellent choice to lead Great Lakes Works, a key supplier of sheet products to the automotive industry," said John H. Goodish, U. S. Steel's chief operating officer.

Jauss, a native of Trenton, N.J., began working at U. S. Steel in 1968 as a student co-op at the company's Fairless Works outside Philadelphia. In 1972, following his graduation from Drexel University with a bachelor of science degree in metallurgical engineering, Jauss joined the company as a management trainee in the sheet and tin metallurgy department at Fairless. He served in a number of increasingly responsible supervisory and management positions in metallurgy and quality control at Fairless, Gary Works, and Fairfield Works before he was promoted to general manager of Research at Pittsburgh headquarters in 1996. In 1999, he was named general manager of sheet technology, and in 2002, managing director of technology. In 2003, he assumed his most recent position, plant manager of finishing operations at Gary Works.

At Great Lakes Works, Jauss replaces Frederick T. Harnack, who has been named general manager of Research at Pittsburgh headquarters.
