U. S. Steel Appoints Salmon Managing Director for Governmental Affairs in Europe

United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) announced today that Scott R. Salmon has been appointed managing director-governmental affairs, Europe. Succeeding Salmon as director-federal governmental affairs for U. S. Steel will be Thomas M. Sneeringer.

In this new position, Salmon, 40, of Arlington, Va., will support and facilitate business development for U. S. Steel throughout Europe. In addition to being responsible for governmental affairs, Salmon will manage public affairs in the countries in which U. S. Steel is pursuing acquisitions. Salmon continues to report to Terrence D. Straub, senior vice president-public policy and governmental affairs but will work closely with John H. Goodish, executive vice president-international and diversified businesses, on the company's acquisition efforts.

Salmon joined USX Corporation, the former parent of U. S. Steel, in 1993 as manager-governmental affairs in the company's Washington, D.C. office, and in 2002 was promoted to director-federal governmental affairs for U. S. Steel. Since joining the company, Salmon has worked on a variety of high-profile legislative issues including international trade, pension, tax, healthcare, market development and the enactment of the Section 201 safeguards.

Prior to joining U. S. Steel, Salmon was a member of the White House staff, where he served as principal deputy for legislative affairs (House) with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Before he joined the OMB, Salmon served as professional staff member for the Budget Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. Previously, Salmon was an international economist for the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, a country desk officer at the Pentagon for the Department of the Army and an economist for the Army Corps of Engineers.

In private industry, Salmon worked in government affairs for CNH Global, which has a manufacturing facility, Bizon, in Radom, Poland.

Salmon holds a bachelor's degree in economics and international affairs from American University, a master's degree in government from Georgetown University and an MBA and MSB in finance from Johns Hopkins University. Through a University of Florida-sponsored program he spent a year at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, where he studied Polish language, history and culture. Salmon, his wife Stephanie, and their three children will make their home in Poland.

Sneeringer, 54, joins U. S. Steel from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), which he served as senior vice president for public policy and general counsel since 1995. In this position he helped develop policy positions in areas including trade, tax, environment, energy, transportation, government R&D programs and appropriations projects.

Sneeringer, who holds a bachelor's degree in government and a law degree from Georgetown University, had broad governmental affairs experience prior to joining AISI. He was a principal in a private lobbying firm, a partner in a law firm with a legislative practice, served six years as legislative director for former U.S. Representative Dan Rostenkowski (D-IL), worked as legal counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was director of national, state and public affairs for The Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
