U. S. Steel Appoints Frederick Jauss Plant Manager of Finishing Operations at Gary WorksPRNewswire-FirstCall United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) announced today the appointment of Frederick G. Jauss to plant manager of finishing operations at Gary Works, effective September 1. Jauss will replace George Klein, who will retire at the end of August after serving the company for 37 years. In his new position, Jauss will be responsible for overseeing the hot rolling and finishing operations at U. S. Steel's flagship plant. "U. S. Steel's business strategy is to focus on value-added steel production, and Gary Works has long been the keystone of that strategy," said U. S. Steel President and Chief Operating Officer John P. Surma. "In his new position as plant manager of our largest and most critical finishing operation, Fred will play a major role in securing our position as a leading global competitor in the value-added steel market." Jauss, a native of Trenton, N.J., graduated in 1972 from Drexel University in Philadelphia with a bachelor of science degree in metallurgical engineering. He joined U. S. Steel in 1968 as a student co-op in the metallurgy department at Fairless Works and returned full-time as a management trainee upon graduation. He progressed through a number of increasingly responsible supervisory and managerial positions in metallurgy, hot rolling and quality assurance at Fairless Works, Gary Works and Fairfield Works before he was named general manager of research in 1996, general manager of sheet technology in 1999, and managing director of technology in 2002.
