U. S. Steel's Tom Usher to Speak at Western Pennsylvania Labor-Management LuncheonPRNewswire The five Area Labor-Management Committees of Western Pennsylvania will host their Second Annual Luncheon on Labor-Management Relations on Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at the IBEW Local #5 world-class training and conference center on Pittsburgh's Southside. On the heels of local Labor Day celebrations, the luncheon will be attended by regional and statewide business, union, and government leaders and will feature Thomas J. Usher, Chairman, CEO and President of United States Steel Corporation, as the keynote speaker. Mr. Usher has played a lead role in working with the Bush Administration and the United Steel Workers of America to promote recovery in the steel industry, which has been severely impacted by imported steel. On March 5, 2002, President Bush imposed steel tariffs of up to thirty percent on certain steel imports. The President's decision followed tireless efforts by the steel industry and the USWA to convince President Bush of the critical condition in which the steel industry lies. Mr. Usher continues to work with the USWA to defend the President's decision to provide relief to the country's steel industry. In addition, Mr. Usher has recently overseen the transition of USX Corporation, separating the Marathon Oil and U.S. Steel companies. As North America's largest integrated steel producer, United States Steel Corporation has been interested in restructuring the steel industry through mergers and acquisitions. United States Steel employs approximately 7,000 people in Pennsylvania, with its workforce being represented by the USWA. The five Area Labor-Management Committees hosting the event include: Midwestern PA ALMC, NwPACC, Southwestern PA ALMC, Three Rivers ALMC, and Westmoreland County ALMC. Each Committee works in conjunction with local and state union, business, and government leaders to provide a cooperative environment in which businesses and their employees can prosper and work cooperatively to solve any labor issues that may arise. By fostering a positive labor environment, the ALMC's seek to promote regional economic development and spur the growth of family-sustaining jobs. Registration for the Labor-Management Relations Luncheon begins at 11:15 AM, with the luncheon program beginning at 12:00 PM. John Chalovich from IBEW Local #5 will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, and the Western Pennsylvania ALMC Award will also be presented at the luncheon.
